Abstract

The study examines the argumentation of the Széchenyi–Kossuth debate's first phase. The method of the examination is rhetorical analyses. The hypotheses of the study are also related to this method: (1) the rhetorical analysis is suitable for analysing the debate since (2) the Széchenyi‒Kossuth debate was in fact a rhetorical event. While in the process of the exploring the rhetorical situation and the structure of the debate, the study considered the whole debate, the detailed analysis of the argumentation and the comments on style and presentation are valid only for the two books that represent the first phase of the debate. In addition to the classical rhetoric, the analysis takes also the new rhetoric of the 20th century and modern theories of argumentation into account.
