Abstract

Nowadays, the noun üszög has become a rather rare word in the Hungarian language, it is still used mostly in the sense of the ʼfungal disease of grainsʼ, and much less often in its more original sense of ʼglowing emberʼ. Its rarity has also lead to the oblivion of those phraseological units which were formed in parallel with it. This study attempts to collect these units from the older version of Hungarian language, and also seeks to explore and explain their motivation and the cognitive image they convey. The article also deals with the explanation of the proverb Amint üszögölöd gyopárod, úgy ütsz belé, and the meteorological rule Péter üti az üszögöt, jön a melegebb idő, in detail.
