Abstract

Based on his collection of morphology, Elekfi (1998) observed that thereappear to be instances of a functional split between the allomorphs ofcertain morphemes, and one such functional split is assumed to existbetween the past tense third person singular forms of certain verbs (andalso in the past participles that are formally identical to these). Thisobservation was a source of inspiration to perform a corpus-baseddiachronic analysis on the instances of this type of functional split; thepresent article is the last item of a three-part series of research papers.Similarly to the previous studies (Horváth 2021, 2022), it aims atdescribing the diachronic background of this functional split based onfrequency data drawn from historical corpora, and it also provides a listof examples that illustrate the different shades of meaning of the variants.
