Competition between verbs with the suffix -hat/-het and constructions of tud ‘can’ + infinitive

The author studies a currently spreading linguistic change on the basis of synchronic data. In particular, he asks what direction of change is indicated by competing uses of two synonymous solutions: verbs involving the derivational affix -hat/-het and the corresponding phrasal constructions (tud ‘can’ + infinitive). The results of the inquiry show the spread of the latter version.

The authors retain the copyright of their papers; however, in the case of an occasional secondary publication, the bibliographical data of the first publication have to be included.
