For indigenous Hungarian communities living outside Hungary, in the Carpathian Basin – as communities living in a minority situation – the protection of the native language and the native language school network is an issue of community, language politics and language planning as well,
since the future, the persistence, the protection of the identity of the community can be efficiently influenced through the language of teaching and the content, attitude and methods of teaching Hungarian
as a native language, and the goals of national politics and language politics can be efficiently achieved through education planning. In our study, supported with empirical data, we wish to present
how the language and education planning process the native Hungarian community of Subcarpathia has drafted in the past decades as a goal in several scientific works is/can be implemented in practice. What role can language attitude have in efficiency and how it can be shaped, can it be shaped at all on scientific grounds on the level of public education and higher education? The results of the studies presented prove that the efforts of the past decades proved successful: the Hungarian language educational institution system serves the interests of the local community at every level; young people can learn scientifically based knowledge about their native language and the majority language, in public education and in higher education alike. Indeed, language tolerance is essential in the case of a multilingual community with several nationalities.
