Abstract

Language attitude research among German minorities living in East- and Southeast-European countries does not have yet such a long tradition as in the case of Germany, Austria, and Germanspeaking Switzerland. The results of language attitude research undertaken among elderly minority speakers in Hungary using German either actively or passively give an insight into the way they think and feel about the different languages as well as their standard, regional and local varieties, their usage, and the gradual erosion of German (Bavarian) dialects through generations. Based on the self-definition of the bilingual informants, the study focuses on the affective and conative components of the language attitudes of German minority speakers in Hungary.
