Abstract

The subject of the study is the history of the hydrographic common noun séd, based on the occurrences of the word as common noun and a place name in the Old Hungarian period. The paper discusses issues concerning the phonological history of the word, its variants, and their spatial and temporal distribution and occurrence. The determination of the meaning of séd is done by simultaneous consideration of several viewpoints in which the geographical environment of the occurrence of the word has a crucial role. Finally, the study surveys and summarizes etymological ideas related to the word.
