Abstract

This paper looks at Ferenc Rosenbacher’s Hungarian Grammar Adapted for Infants, a key representative of the first Hungarian school grammars from 1792, with the aim of pointing out that Hungarian school grammars published in an increasing number from the late 18th century were major workshops for shaping linguistic terminology. A comparison with the relevant chapters of two scholarly grammars from the same period, one by János Főldi written in response to a call for bids, and the other entitled Debrecen Grammar, shows that Rosenbacher, contrary to superficial opinions, produced a professionally reliable textbook for pedagogical purposes in terms of both the names and the categorisation of parts of speech.
