Abstract

The Historical Grammar of the Hungarian Language is a synthesis of earlier analytical studies that discusses the morphology and syntax of Hungarian until the end of the Old Hungarian period, in three volumes. The book was written under the conceptual leadership of its editor-in-chief, Loránd Benkő. This paper presents the principles he advocated concerning his approach to linguistic change, including the role and limitations of synchrony within that approach, the requirements of historical-synchronic sections, and the importance of a systematic view of history. The paper also gives an inside view of the one-time progress of writing of the Grammar as determined by its editor-in-chief.
