Paths in the grammaticalization of the Hungarian dative suffix (-nak/-nek)

This paper presents a corpus based study on the grammaticalization of the Hungarian dative suffix, -nak/-nek. The study attempts to trace the extension of the meaning of the suffix based on historical data taken mainly from the Old Hungarian Corpus. The study also intends to show that the grammaticalization of the suffix at hand is not a linear process whereby the newer functions arise, but it has a dynamic nature. Newer functions and meanings can react upon the already existing ones by their constructional patterns or their semantic or pragmatic features.
