This study reviews the possibilities of using toponymic sources preserved from the age of the Árpád dynasty. The use of these elements in the domains of language history and in history has a long tradition in Hungarian research, one of the critical points of which is the treatment of the relationship between language and ethnicity. The linguistic and ethnic identification role of toponyms can be refined using the method of place name reconstruction, which analyses names in their complex networks. This is particularly important in the study of place name borrowings. The local linguistic value of toponymic data can be interpreted differently for different types of names. In this respect, microtoponyms can be used as the most reliable source. In the case of hydronyms, greater importance should be given to the names of individual river sections than before. The study illustrates the different socio-onomastic values of settlement names using the example of settlement names formed from ethnonyms and personal names. The cases presented clearly illustrate both the possibilities and limitations of these research methods.
