In older Hungarian language, the lexeme samáda, or chamade [ʃamad] in a French style, was used as a military term, mainly as a part of a phraseological terminus technicus (samádát üt/üttet ʼto beat/whack a chamadeʼ). It was used to express the giving up of the fight by one of the belligerents, usually by beating a drum. Less frequently, a trumpet blast was also used to signal an acknowledgement of defeat. For this reason, for example, Schamade blasen ʼto blow chamadeʼ was also used in the German language. The expression in the Hungarian language is more likely to be found only as a military term. At the same time, the figurative use of the saying in the French and the German languages was also created by secondary phraseologisation in the sense of ʼhis heart is beating fastʼ or ʼhe is retreating, giving up his resistanceʼ.
