The relationship between Gábor Bálint and the Academy

Gábor Bálint of Szentkatolna (1844–1913) began his career as a promising linguist, but he did not receive proper professional training to integrate into the prevailing linguistic trends of his time. His fieldwork in Asia made him a recognized scholar, but his fanciful theories of linguistic relationships were not accepted by the leading linguists of the time. As an outspoken opponent of Finno-Ugric linguistic affinity, it was widely held that his scientific advancement was hindered by the Academy’s “foreign-hearted” linguists. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the relationship between Gábor Bálint and the Academy, based on documents found in Academic Gazette and the Archives of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Through this, our aim is to gain a clearer understanding of both Bálint’s work and the operation of the Academy in the era of the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary.
