Long palatal vowels in Sylvester’s dialect: Sound change and paradigmatic effects.

This paper examines the system of long palatal unrounded vowels in the variety of early Middle Hungarian represented by János Sylvester. The analysis shows that in Sylvester’s orthography the letter ę originally denoted an [eː] vowel which was not affected by the [eː] > [iː] shift in word-final position. This word-final [eː] was extended analogically within certain morphological paradigms and was preserved in contexts where the phonological expression of specific morphological contrasts would otherwise have been endangered. The paper provides a detailed account of the diachronic phonological and paradigmatic aspects of these processes, and it challenges the general applicability of the push-chain theory to the development of the í‑shift. In a broader perspective, the study compares Sylvester’s data with the language use of Gáspár Heltai and Gáspár Károlyi, as well as with later dialectal developments.
