THE TRANSFORMATION AND CURRENT STATUS OF OUTSKIRTS OF COUNTYTOWNS FROM 1990 TILL NOWADAYS

Abstract

The presentstudy aimsto presentthe changesin the administrative area of county
towns(cities with county status),aswell asin the populationofthe inner and outer
areas of these settlements, with special attention to the outer areas. The changes
were examined between 1990 and 2011 based on census data.
The main results are in accordance with previous national research. The
populationofthe interior area of cities decreased but atthe same time the number
of inhabitantsof outskirtsincreased.I.e.internalsuburbanizationtook place,much
stronger than in the whole settlement network.
Overall, the number ofperi-urban areas increased, while the number ofinhabited
peri-urban areas decreased. The function ofthese areas is constantly changing. In
addition to the scattered farms, the former vineyards and enclosed gardens are
becoming more and more important
