Abstract

The change of the number of administratively independent settlements in Hungary is not a new phenomena. During the 20th century there were periods, when the decrease of the settlements were important (1920-1945, 1951-1984) and when the increase (years after 1945, 1985 till nowadays). In this paper we deal with one of the increasing periods (after 1990), when there are 96 administratively new settlements in Hungary and during this period there were not any settlements, which lost its independence. There are really different ways in the development of these new settlements after 1990. Some of them are really successful, some of them not. Most of the new settlements are relatively small (60% are with less than 1.000 inhabitants). The dynamic ones are around the largest towns (especially the suburban settlements) and some villages near the Austrian border and the touristic areas.

We made a small research on the web pages of the administratively new settlements. 11 of the 96 settlements have no web-page, and only on 4 web page found information and value judgement about the independence. Most of these self governments emphasize the rapid development after the administrative independence. So the importance of the web pages is much smaller than the expected. To explore deeper connections about the different reasons and ways we need more emphirical researches.
