Abstract

A settlement’s layout, functional diversity and morphological characteristics mostly follow from the efficiency and level of how much the local society was able to make use of the natural resources while taking into consideration the division of labor within the settlement and between settlements. This social ability formed the functional characteristics of the settlement in different periods and at the same time; it reflects the development of the settlement itself. The direction of the development might be positive or negative and in terms of its intensity, it is fast or slow. It obviously follows from the preceding that the development of settlements is not steady but instead is very much the product of different phases. The level and pace of the improvement of a settlement is influenced by both internal (endogen) and external (exogenous) factors. The internal factors – the knowledge base and cultural capital of the society, the structure of population, infrastructure and decisions made at the local level - determine the inner energy of the settlement. The external factors – geographical environment, spatial relations, central decisions) - are the outer makings, which might utilize or interiorize. Its efficiency is mainly defined by the advancement of the means of production. The knowledge base or cultural capital of the society increases in importance during the different historical periods in terms of the position, the possibility and pace of development of a settlement within a settlement-system.
