Abstract

The green areas play a very important role in the cities and they operate as separated functional areas. Of this role mainly have ecological, aesthetic, sanitary aspects.

The green areas of Budapest in the past two decades reduced. Nowadays only 21.6% (11334 hectares) of the whole territory of the Capitol is green area. The decrease primarily resulted from the decline of natural green space, but significantly reduced the amount of green space built on the sports field, too. The primarily case of this process is the functional change of the land use. At the present, there are shopping malls and houses on the former green areas.

The vast majority of Budapest green areas are natural green space, especially in forest. The most typical uses of man-made green areas are sport fields and cemeteries.

Geographical location of green areas is extremely uneven in the Capital. On the Buda side, due to the large forest cover is much larger than Pest. In particular, a there are high proportion of green spaces at I, II. and XII. district, low in densely populated area of city centre, on the other hand.
