Regulations on Building Demolition in the Cities of the Roman Empire

This article examines the legal and social background of demolition prohibitions in cities of the Roman Empire. Drawing on imperial legal texts and epigraphic evidence, it analyzes how municipal and state authorities sought to prevent the unwarranted destruction of both public and private buildings. These restrictions were driven not only by aesthetic or heritage concerns but also by economic interests and the need to maintain public order. The study highlights how protecting the built environment was closely linked to preserving the identity and functional integrity of the urban community.
