This article examines the historical context of the construction of the first castellum at Aquincum, focusing on the preceding political-military developments and the strategic reorganization of the province. Drawing on archaeological finds, architectural traces, and written sources, the study reconstructs the chronology and purposes of the site. It argues that the castellum emerged through a gradual process rather than a single construction event, and was closely tied to broader Roman efforts to reinforce frontier defence. Particular attention is given to the rationale behind the location, the separation of military and civilian spaces, and the castellum’s role within the wider framework of the Danube limes.
