Is the Desert Far Away?
The Dramaturgy of Distance in Contemporary Antigone Productions

This paper examines the dramaturgy of contemporary productions of Antigone through the motif of “distance.” Metaphors such as the “desert,” “border,” and “emptiness” evoke not only spatial but also temporal and ethical dimensions that shape the performances’ emotional and political resonance. The analysis reveals how distance becomes a site of decision-making, alienation, and resistance, and how space configures the possibilities of moral stance. By reworking the classical text, these productions also reinterpret the relationship between political scope and theatrical presence.
