This article analyzes the political self-representation of Cato the Younger during the Catilinarian conspiracy, with a focus on the speech attributed to him in Sallust’s Bellum Catilinae. The study examines how Cato constructs his identity as a defender of the res publica, using rhetorical strategies to articulate his vision of the state. It further explores how both Sallust’s and Cicero’s portrayals contribute to the posthumous image of Cato and shape later interpretations of the moral decline associated with the end of the Roman Republic.
