Author Guidelines

Informations for Authors

The journal Ókor welcomes submissions on any aspect of antiquity and its reception (please refer to our sections for further details). Manuscripts should adhere to established methodological standards and contribute to the existing body of knowledge in the field. We also emphasize the importance of clear and accessible writing, ensuring that scholarly rigor is combined with readability for a broader audience.

The following length guidelines apply to submissions: Research articles and archaeological reports: approximately 35,000 characters (including spaces). Other article types (e.g., exhibition reviews, book reviews): a maximum of 10,000 characters (including spaces), which is roughly equivalent to one-quarter of a signature.

To ensure efficient processing of your manuscript, please adhere to the following basic formatting guidelines.

Source texts

Quotations and paraphrases from ancient authors should be cited parenthetically within the main text, immediately following the cited material. References to specific passages should follow this format: the book number in Roman numerals, followed by Arabic numerals for smaller divisions (without periods after the final number, such as a poem number). The author’s name is followed by a colon, then the italicized title of the work. Numbers, except for the last one in a sequence, should be followed by a period, with a space separating the numbers:

References

References should be presented as footnotes and a comprehensive bibliography or as a bibliographic essay. Please include the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for all cited publications where available. You can verify DOIs using this tool: https://doi.crossref.org/simpleTextQuery

Footnote citations should include the author’s last name, publication year, and page number(s). Complete bibliographic information, with the publication year highlighted, should be provided in a separate bibliography at the end of the article. Please see the examples below (note the hyphenation):

Other

In the journal Ókor, foreign words and titles of works will be italicized. Full quotations from ancient authors will also be italicized (without the use of quotation marks). Quotations from non-ancient authors should be enclosed in quotation marks.

Centuries and millennia should be indicated using Arabic numerals and should not be abbreviated (e.g., a Kr. e. 3. században; a Kr. e. 4–3. évezredben).

Transcription of foreign words

The journal employs standard scientific transcription for Greek names and terms (Aischylos, Homéros, psyché, polis, etc.). For ancient languages written in non-Latin scripts, we recommend using the most straightforward phonetic transcription systems commonly found in mainstream academic publications.

How to submit your article

Please indicate in your submission which images you propose to use to illustrate your article. Image captions should be provided at the end of the manuscript. We also welcome suggestions for relevant source texts that support your article’s topic.

Please include abstracts (approximately 200-250 words) and keywords in both English and Hungarian.

Authors of research articles and archaeological reports are also requested to provide the following information (typically placed before the main text) for readers: full name, academic title, current affiliation, ORCID, primary research area(s), a key recent publication, and the most recent publication in Ókor.

Unless alternative arrangements have been made with the editorial team, articles should be submitted electronically as Word (.doc, .docx) or Rich Text Format (.rtf) files to the designated editor.

Submitted articles will undergo an evaluation process, which may include peer review by anonymous experts, typically taking up to two months. The editors will notify the author within this timeframe regarding the publication decision and any conditions for acceptance. The Editorial Board reserves the right to adjust the publication date of accepted articles by prior agreement with the author(s).
