Publishing Ethics and Editorial Policy
Ókor. Folyóirat az antik kultúrákról is committed to promoting the highest standards of academic integrity and ethical publishing. The journal adheres to the guidelines set forth by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Council of Science Editors (CSE), as well as the principles of the Budapest Open Access Initiative.
These policies apply to all parties involved in the publishing process, including authors, editors, peer reviewers, and the publisher.
Ókor is an open access journal. All articles are available online without subscription or access fees. There are no submission or publication charges.
The journal is archived in the Digital Institutional Repository of Eötvös Loránd University (EDIT).
Authors retain copyright over their work. Upon acceptance, authors grant the journal the right of first publication, and the article will be published under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0). This allows others to read, download, copy, distribute, and build upon the work for non-commercial purposes, as long as appropriate credit is given.
All submissions to Ókor undergo rigorous scholarly evaluation. The editorial team includes experts in several fields—classical philology (Greek and Latin literature), literary theory, Assyriology, and ancient history—so that most manuscripts can be assessed with appropriate in-house competence. When a topic extends beyond the editors’ direct expertise, manuscripts are referred to external peer reviewers, whose assessments remain anonymous. In this way, the journal ensures that every contribution is subject to thorough academic scrutiny and meets the standards of international scholarly publishing.
Responsibilities of Authors
Authors submitting work to Ókor must:
- Submit only original research or scholarly works not under consideration elsewhere.
- Ensure proper citation of all sources and avoid all forms of plagiarism, including self-plagiarism.
- Clearly acknowledge all contributors, funding sources, or institutional support.
- List only those individuals as co-authors who have made a significant contribution to the research.
- Promptly notify the editors of any significant errors or inaccuracies discovered post-publication.
- Disclose any conflicts of interest that could influence the interpretation of their findings.
Submitting a manuscript implies that the work complies with ethical standards and that all co-authors approve of the submission and its contents.
Responsibilities of Editors
The editorial team is responsible for:
- Ensuring a fair, impartial, and timely peer review process, based on academic merit alone.
- Making decisions to accept or reject submissions solely on the basis of scholarly value, originality, and clarity.
- Avoiding conflicts of interest and recusing themselves from handling submissions where such conflicts exist.
- Taking appropriate action in response to allegations of ethical misconduct, including issuing corrections, retractions, or expressions of concern if needed.
Editors will never use unpublished materials submitted to the journal for their own research or purposes.
Responsibilities of Reviewers
Peer reviewers play a vital role in upholding the quality of the journal. Reviewers must:
- Conduct reviews objectively, constructively, and within the timeframe requested by the editors.
- Disclose any conflicts of interest that may affect their judgment and decline to review in such cases.
- Alert the editors to any ethical concerns, including plagiarism, duplicate publication, or data manipulation.
- Evaluate manuscripts based solely on their scholarly content, without regard to the author’s background or institutional affiliation.
Conflicts of Interest
All parties involved in the publication process are expected to disclose any potential conflicts of interest.
When such a conflict arises, the concerned individual must inform the editorial board immediately. Editors will take steps to ensure the integrity and impartiality of the process.
Retraction, Correction, and Editorial Notes
In cases where significant errors, ethical violations, or misconduct are found post-publication, the editorial board will take appropriate actions, which may include:
- Correction: For minor errors that do not compromise the results or conclusions.
- Retraction: For major issues such as plagiarism, falsified data, or duplicate publication.
- Expression of Concern: When investigations are ongoing but initial findings are inconclusive.
Retractions and corrections will be clearly marked and made freely accessible in all versions of the journal (print and online). The editorial board will also notify indexing and abstracting services to maintain the scholarly record’s integrity.
Handling Misconduct and Complaints
All allegations of unethical behavior will be investigated in accordance with COPE guidelines. Complaints may be submitted by authors, reviewers, or readers. In serious cases, external institutions may be consulted.
The journal commits to resolving disputes transparently, respectfully, and without bias, while protecting the confidentiality of all parties involved.
Archiving and Preservation
All published content is digitally preserved through institutional repositories (EDIT) and archiving services to ensure long-term accessibility. The journal is committed to maintaining access to its full archive in perpetuity.
