The Sighs of the Earth in Indian Mythology

This article focuses on narratives related to earth goddesses in Indian mythology, particularly the figures of Prithivī and Bhūmi. It investigates how the Earth is portrayed as a sentient, suffering, and communicative being in Vedic and post-Vedic sources. Through the metaphor of the “sighs of the Earth,” the study examines the anthropomorphic and emotional dimensions of the natural world and their religious and ethical implications. The Earth’s suffering and speech signal a disturbance in the cosmic order, the consequences of human excess, and the need for divine intervention. From an ecocritical perspective, the article offers insights into the intersection of Indian mythology and environmental awareness.
