Abstract

Anonymus’ Gesta Hungarorum represents a key source for Hungarian language history, providing us with information about the Hungarian language of the early 13th century. The paper outlines how gestas as a source type in general, and Anonymus’ work in particular, may contribute to research in historical linguistics. Based on the text of chapter 32 of the gesta and the Hungarian language elements it contains, the paper focuses on the research opportunities for historical orthography, phonology and dialectology, the history of morphemes, common nouns and proper names, as well as the factors and criteria to be taken into account in these investigations. The paper also discusses the strive for norms and the encyclopedic processing of the Hungarian elements of the gesta.
