Views on the Construction of the Female Self in Two Contemporary Mexican Writers: Ana García Bergua and Hilda Sitges

Abstract

This article analyses four works by contemporary Mexican women writers Ana García Bergua and Hilda Sitges: “Despertar” and “La puerta contigua”, by García Bergua, and “Era y no era yo” and “Papel de estraza”, by Hilda Sitges. The analysis begins with the way in which the female self is constructed in the narrative of Mexican women writers, who, from the affirmation of their personal and artistic identity, participate more and more actively in the discussion on the shaping of literary discourses, both in their meaning and in their structure. Thus, this study examines how the identity of the self is constructed through self-creation (beyond the Cartesian cogito) and the appropriation of the self through the affirmation of sexuality in narrative linked to the concept of the self in the Freudian theory.
