This essay aims to explore the discourse of friendship in the First Part of Guzmán de Alfarache (1599) by examining the different levels of friendship depicted and the way in which they are represented in this work. Specifically, it will focus on the friendship between Guzmán and the driver, the story of Ozmín and Daraja, and the relationship between Guzmán and the captain. Finally, we will observe the insertion of the story of Dorido and Clorinia. These tales reveal a discourse based on the classical notion of amicitia and how, through deviation from the ideal, it can become corrupted.
