Considering that story telling aims at focusing on real events happening right before the moment of writing, the two novels we analyze place themselves between fiction and – everyday or political – history. De Campo’s narrative can be rightly considered to be the first Mexican short novel written on an event taken from crime news and exploited in the extreme as dramatic parody; Azuela’s book is admittedly a report on the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. This parallel reveals also the treatment of the journalistic medium and the contrast between reporters and writers.
