This paper gives a panoramic view of aphorisms, its literary redemption as a genre, and spells out its similarities with and differences from other narrative structures based on brevity (micro fictions, apothegms, sentences, maxims as well as legends, riddles, proverbs, jokes). I also draw up an authorial demography and a textual inventory of this “lesser muse” which has a seductive presence in Mexican national literature due to its vast, undocumented and concealed nature. It has more than a hundred years of tradition from Francisco Sosa’s book, Breves notas tomadas en la escuela de la vida (Antonio García Cubas’ Press, 1910) which is actually our starting point to establish the literary historiography of the genre.
