This article aims to investigate the role of the dramaturg and the notion of dramaturgie in the history of Italian theatre, through an analysis of the collaboration between Gerardo Guerrieri and Franco Zeffirelli on the first Italian production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Particular attention is given to the conceptualisation of dramaturgie as a manifestation of an artistic and investigative disposition, generously applied to the processes of theatrical composition. The inquiry is grounded in the culturally influential figure of Gerardo Guerrieri. Reconstructed through a substantial body of original and unpublished materials housed in the Guerrieri Archive at Sapienza University of Rome, the Guerrieri–Zeffirelli collaboration offers renewed insights into the concept of dramaturgy and the transformations this practice has undergone within the Italian theatrical tradition.
