Heinrich Scherer's world atlas, Atlas Novus published in 1702, took a new approach. Scherer, a prominent Jesuit cartographer, is credited with the innovative cartographic representation of the history of the Catholic Church. In the 18th century, several Jesuit monks of Hungarian origin, in addition to their missionary work, were also engaged in mapping the areas where they carried out their missionary work. Scherer, using the maps of his fellow monks, produced an atlas with new and modern data.
