Abstract

The Eötvös and Marussi tensors describe the physical and geometrical properties of the level surfaces of the
gravity potential. The relevant theoretical relationships have been known for a long time, but calculations using actual
measurements to show their practical applicability have been missing. The necessary data – partly based on our own
measurements – were available for numerical checks at the first gravity base point in Hungary (the Oltay point) and the
current national gravity base point in the Mátyás Hill Cave. At both measurement points, the physical and geometrical
properties of the level surface and the plumbline were analysed.
