Abstract

Before the 1990s, the total length of the motorways built in Hungary did not exceed 360 km. Not any kind of archaeological monitoring or rescue excavation programme accompanied their construction (Raczky 2007, 5). The sites of Tatabánya-Kukorica-hegyi-dűlő and Tatabánya-Zöld-dombi-dűlő count as exceptions because Sarolta B. Szatmári from the Kuny Domokos Museum in Tata carried out rescue excavations there preceding and, partially, during the construction of Motorway M1 in 1978–1985, uncovering parts of an Avar Period settlement and its cemetery. The 400 graves of the cemetery and the 46 features of the settlement represent a major source for the research on the Avar Period inhabitation of the area. This paper presents the features and structure of the 7th–8th-century settlement.
