Abstract

The aim of this case study is to explore the structural frameworks and local specificities
influencing the development of Örménykút. In order to do so, I outlined the main stages of
the development of Örménykút based on news reports about the settlement published
between 1952 and 2022, and then conducted primary empirical research, which included
semi-structured interviews and fieldwork. Based on this study, it can be concluded that
Örménykút is a tanya-village with a cumulative pattern of social disadvantages. Due to its
unique development path, it has both the difficulties of a former tanya frontier and certain
symptoms of the small village syndrome as a result of depopulation. Given its peripheral
location, informal reproductive and productive work and social relations can play a
significant role in the social reproduction of households, and by exploring their
characteristics and internal spatial differences, we can come closer to a deeper
understanding of the socio-spatial processes in these specific settlements in rural areas.
