COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE URBANIZATION PROCESSES OF MISKOLC AND TIMISOARA (1910-2021)
Abstract
In my study, I analyzed the agglomerations and suburban zones ofthe régiónál centers of
the Carpathian Basin ofMiskolc and Temesvár. At the beginning ofthe 20th century, the
development curve of the two régiónál centers with nearly the same population has
changed markedly to today - as a result ofthe same and different developmentsources in
time andspace. The industrialpotential ofMiskolc and Temesvár received special attention
during the socialist economic planning period, sometimes resulting in the establishment of
voluntary industrial plants. The increase in the number ofindustrial workplaces nőt only
resulted in a dynamic increase in the population ofMiskolc and Temesvár, the demographic
changes of the settlements located in their surroundings can alsó be described with
agglomeration characteristics. Theformation ofsuburbs and the change in the population
of Central cities are both noteworthy, indicating differences in their dynamism and
adaptability. Among the settlements ofthe Miskolc and Temesvár agglomerations, only 8-
10 settlements can clearly State that they were the winners ofthe socio-economic changes
ofthe last quarter ofa century, and theyfarm the suburban regions ofthe big cities. In the
case ofboth agglomerations, itis afact thatsmall towns cannot or can hardly represent a
realistic economic alternative to the Central big city
