THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PATH DEPENDENCE AND TOURISM DEVELOPMENT, IN THE CASE OF BUDAPEST
Abstract
The study investigates the main characteristics ofthe evolutionary economic geography,
focusing on the linkage and connection of the path dependency theory and the tourism
destination development The economic evolutionarygeography relies on three conceptual
foundations: complexity theory, generalised Darwinism and path dependence. From all of
these, path dependence can be associated with tourism the most. The so-called
"evolutionary" turn ofthe geography can relate to the tourism industry by the simplefact
thatlike any other industry, tourism destinations have theirown developmentpaths which
are nőt only determined by the geographical and economic circumstances, bút the actions
of the pást as well. The main purpose of the research is, to answer the question, how
processes of the pást ajfected the tourism industry ofBudapest In the pást decade, the
tourism of the Hungárián Capital has been dominated by a certain type ofsupply and
demand, which created an image aboutthe city. This imagegenerated alsó conflicts besides
revenues. Therefore, in addition to clarijying the interrelationships between the theories of
the various disciplines, the research aiming to answer the question of which inherited
political, economic, historical, settlement morphological paradigms of the pást have an
influence on the capital's tourism today. Briefly, which actions has an influence on the
future development. The study emphasises the importance of understanding the pást
actions, which can indicate the development directions ofthefiiture.
