Secondary education catchment area of Nyíregyháza
Abstract
Population mobility is one way of exploring horizontal and vertical spatial relationships between settlements. In this context, the exploration of realistic catchment area systems whose spatial paths are determined by linear infrastructure plays an important role. One element of significant spatial relationships is the educational catchment area, which reflects both objective economic opportunities and subjective individual expectations. The secondary education catchment area of Nyíregyháza was based on the data of 4,632 commuting students attending the city's eight to eight high schools and vocational secondary schools. The extent of the hegemonic, dominant and transient catchment areas and the extent of their attraction intensity were compared with a survey conducted fifty years earlier (Beluszky 1974). Based on the results of the research it can be stated that the numerical growth of Nyíregyháza secondary education institutions and the widening of their educational offerings did not mean a drastic change in the educational catchment area of Nyíregyháza. Traditions are more durable, therefore, in the hegemonic educational catchment area of Nyíregyháza there were 9 settlements, dominant educational catchment area 20 settlements and temporary educational catchment area 27 settlements. Nyíregyháza has a strong attraction in a radius of 15-30 km. The secondary education attraction intensity of Nyíregyháza is low for 172 settlements in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, and the attraction intensity nonsignificant for the county and national borders.
