Abstract

From the point of view of Hungarian tourism destinations’ competitiveness, besides other factors, the issue of area-based destination development is also important. The aim of the study is the multi-dimensional examination and typification of the areas with Hungarian tourism destination management organizations. The basis of the analysis is the data of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. Within the framework of the study, 79 TDMs and 377 settlements were analysed. The research uses cluster analysis, based on 22 indicators to form the groups of TDMs. After the classification, we identified the characteristics of the formed clusters relating to settlement structure, urbanization, accessibility, landscape, population density and the distribution of guest nights. The results of the study may facilitate effective strategy-making, support market positioning, and can contribute to the identification of regional patterns of tourism, with particular reference to the settlement geographic characteristics of TDMs.
