HUMAN GEOGRAPHY OF THE MANORS AND WINE HILLS OF TENGELIC
Abstract
The population of Tengelic started to decline in the second half of the 20th century because
of out-migration and aging of the population especially in the outskirts (manors and wine
hills) of the village. There are 11 outskirt settlements in Tengelic (10 manors and a wine
hill), which is one of the largest numbers of populated manors in Hungary among all the
settlements. The outskirts of Tengelic lost their original functions and characteristics, but
we can see a strong differentiation among them by population size and functions. The
common characteristics of them are the aging and exchange of population lack of working
places and services, degradation of the buildings and the decline of agricultural function.
The dominant function nowadays is the residental one in all manors and wine-hills of
Tengelic. The connection between the outskirts and the central village is weak because of
the large distance and the lack of transport connections. In the future the underpopulation
and the increase of social problems are probable.
