Abstract

I briefly go through the overview of security environment and security challenges of
Hungary in the beginning of the 21st century. I write in more detail about the causes and
effects of the migrant crisis. Thereafter i move on to the situation of the outskirt military
objects. Due to social and economic changes atthe end ofthe 20th century the structure of
the Hungarian Defense Forces and the number of its functioning barracks have changed
significantly. A significantpartofthese barracksare located in the outskirts, on theborders
ofsettlements. Barracks in provincialtowns were dismantled after quick decisionsleaving
behind established infrastructure and buildings which have been disused and dilapidated
even up to this day. We have to look for ways to utilise disused facilities and decrease the
environmental damage still detectable around these areas today.
In the case of decommissionedbarracks, opportunitiesshould be sought, also in connection
with migratory pressures, which pointto the possibility of utilizing objectsthat can also be
found in abandoned outlying areas and aim to reduce the environmental damage that can
still be found there. The first impression of those coming to the settlementfrom elsewhere
isthe nature ofthe outskirts, and a weedy and crumblingfacility can be quite disillusioning.
One of the main attractions of the peripheral zones is the beauty of the landscape, the
damage of which impairsthe recreationalopportunitiesof the people living in the interior.
I included those barracks on the outskirtsin a table, which can be used in the first round. I
conclude that one aspect of sustainability would be rebuilding and utilising the disused
facilities.
