Abstract

Due to social and economic changes at the end of the 20th century the structure of the Hungarian Defense Forces and the number of its functioning barracks have changed significantly. Garrisons in Budapest were abandonet after quick decisions leaving behind established infrastructure and buildings which have been disused and dilapidated even up to this day.

We have to look for ways to utilise disused facilities and decrease the environmental damage still detectable around these areas today. I visited the areas with disused barracks all over the country including Budapest during my several year long research and analysed my experiences. One aspect of my analysis is the way the barracks have been utilised and where within the area the facilities are situated.

Also, I describe past and present difficulties regarding the utilising of the facilities. Most districts had no agenda for the utilization of the barracks or were not in a position to make decisions. Local governments had no sufficient funds for guarding, maintenance and environmental damage control of the facilities. I conclude that one aspect of sustainability would be rebuilding and utilising the disused facilities.
