TRADITIONAL ELEMENTS OF THE HUNGARIAN SETTLEMENT SYSTEM – INVESTIGATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF THE OUTSKIRTS IN THE SOUTHERN TRANSDANUBIAN REGION
Abstract
In Hungary the outskirts of settlements began to develop in the 18th century and they were mostly connected to agriculture. Research interest were mainly focused onto tanyas (scattered farms), which are characteristic of the Great Hungarian Plain – this is a traditional research problem for the Hungarian human geography. Several excellent geographers examined the tanyas, but the other types in the outskirts did not received enough importance. We can also meet tanyas in Transdanubia, but here traditionally the hamlets and majors are more characteristic. These areas besides the tanyas concentrate the largest outskirts population. The purpose of this study to examine the differentiation and the population changes in this area, which is followed up to date by census data.
