Abstract

The economic crisis, the country's general economic difficulties, and the crisis phenomena presented also in the Miskolc agglomeration have changed the suburbanizational interests of agglomerational-suburbanizational settlements. Therefore, concepts which support earlier extensive development will be replaced by more intensive settlement development ideas focusing on the stabilization of the population and the efficient use of existing local resources. These have an impact also on the suburbanization processes in the Miskolc agglomeration, they keep them back. Based on the survey, it has been shown that the significant increase in the costs associated with the suburban way of life, the apathy of the suburban generation, the deterioration of the former "prestige living spaces", and the social effects of the financial-economic crisis all have contributed to the decline of the rate of social strata which prefer and are able to take the suburban way of live. The presence of the Roma ethnic group in a higher proportion had a decisive influence on the direction, social differentiation and territorial-settlementary characteristics of the suburban processes around the city. The duality of the suburban settlements associated with Miskolc will be, in our opinion, permanently in existence in the future too, and the expected socio-economic processes will only influence the extent, speed and pace of further differentiation.
