SETTLEMENT GEOGRAPHY RESEARCHES IN THE AGGLOMERATING REGION OF SZOMBATHELY
Abstract
In our study we investigated the spatial mark of the population growth in 12 settlements, which belong to the Agglomerating Region of Szombathely. Besides we were going to introduce the limitation method of our survey area. We also attempted the expansions being typed. Finally, the results of our questionnaire and field walk have been presented in our study.
We unfolded the most important changes of settlements structure in 3 different time sections. We were comparing 3 different maps which have been created at different times: we studied the second military survey (1806-1869) then we examined EOTR 10000 map sheet of 1980, finally we studied the current formations of the villages with the help of Google Maps.
We were examining the changes of settlement structures 2 different ways. First, based on the second military survey we could distinguish 4 different types of expansions.
Furthermore, we studied, that based on the expansions, how the investigated settlements have been able to be grouped could we made the since 1980. We identified, that 9 out of 12 settlements have had discernible changes in their settlement structures. These expansions of ground plan could be distinguished into 3 different types of groups: villages with “gated community”, settlements which have been expanded with more streets and finally those sites that have not produced any growth in sight of streets.
We also identified, that those people, who moved to these settlements, resulted changes in traditional morphology by building new, Mediterranean type houses.
