Abstract

Tibor Mendöl (Nagyszénás, 05 May 1905 – Budapest, 21 August 1966), geographer, professor, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, DSc.  He studied in Budapest, worked at the University of Debrecen, than Budapest. He is one of the most important Hungarian human geographers, he had dealed with settlement geography and regional geography.

In this paper I deal with the next questions:

  1. How I got in contact with the geography of Tibor Mendöl, because I am not a „Mendöl-pupil” and I have not met him
  2. The preludes – basic pillars of the geography of Mendöl
  3. Life work and the model of city structure

Mendöl started to deal with the settlements of Alföld (Great Hungarian Plain), especially in the papers of „Geography of Szarvas”, „Landscape and man” and „General Human Geography”.  His main book is the „General Settlement Geography”, the base work of Hungarian settlement geography. First of all, he dealed with the geographical problems of the towns of Alföld, with its special structure. The traditional towns have special morphology, street structure, functional areas and the special outskirt system, the „Tanya-system”. Mendöl combined the morphologic and functional view in functional morphology.
