Abstract

The main purpose of our research and the essay written about it is to give a summary of the late Dr. József Fülöp’s course of life and academic achievement so that both the civil society and the political public sphere can understand and appreciate it. Our investigation has brought some new and important information to light: Mr. Fülöp personally interceded for drilling for oil on the fields of his native village. However, during the drilling – instead of hydrocarbon – medical thermal waters gushed, opening a new perspective for Bük, which has consequently developed from an agricultural village into a health-resort. Mr. József Fülöp’s efforts made for the sake of the development of Bük were deservedly honoured on the 50th anniversary of the spa and on the 5th anniversary of Bük as town and he received the local award of the highest honors.

On the strength of the mayor’s proposal, the town council of Bük rewarded the excellent scientist with the title of posthumous citizen of honor in the jubilee year. The document contains the following:

„By passing the resolution number 179/2012. (06.25.), the Town Council of the Town of Bük rewards Dr. József Fülöp, Hungarian citizen, the later member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the later corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences with the title Posthumous Citizen of Honor for enhancing the reputation of our town due to his outstanding educational and scientific work for many decades and for urging to explore the thermal waters of Bük.”

The award was given to József Fülöp’s widow and his daughter Ágnes by the Mayor of Bük Sándor Németh and Minister of Defence Csaba Hende on the 19th of August 2012 on the ceremonial session of the town council held at the Centre of Culture on the occasion of the foundation of the state.

The presentation of the scientist’s life and work is not only meant for laymen who are interested in the topic but also for the professional geologists and geographers as József Fülöp’s achievements, his finished and – because of his early tragic death – interrupted researches might be instructive and illuminating for everyone. His two significant syntheses devoted to the topic Palaeozoic and written for the series “The Geology of Hungary” belong to the former. The latter is mentioned in a letter of December 2012 which was written by his widow to the mayor of Bük: „His personal favourite and professionally most detailed work called ‘‘KRÉTA’-volume was interrupted, broken, remained uncompleted due to his early death. The family has managed to prevent this work from being carried off. We have been keeping it, its future is unsolved.”

We do hope that the writers of the present abstract and also the Public of the Town of Bük have successfully drawn everyone’s attention to the fact that Mr. József Fülöp’s inheritance should not be monopolized. On the contrary it is ought to be made a common property.
