Abstract

Suburbanization is a well-known and much researched phenomenon in national and international literature, it began in the 1990s. The process of sububurbanization in the small villages is less well researched, although the 13% of the suburban settlements had less than 500 inhabitants in 2011. In settlements with more than 500 inhabitants the population grew; however, in some villages with less than 500 inhabitants, the population grew, in others it did not. These are located in Transdanubia, in the counties of Vas, Zala, Baranya, Somogy. I divided the population change of settlements of more than 500 inhabitants into 3 periods. The population grew between 1990-2001 in these settlements and this growth continued between 2001 and 2006. Between 2006 and 2011 this tendency reverted and the number of settlements with less than 500 inhabitants decreased. The population change in small suburban villages was different from other suburban settlements between 1990 and 2001, 2001-2006 and in 2009-2011. In all three period the population grew in half of the small suburban villages. It is important to note, however, that the population did not increase in the same small suburban villages. We examined the small suburban villages around Szombathely, Zalaegerszeg, Kaposvár, Pécs between 1990-2001, 2110-2006, 2006-2011. Between 1990 and 2001 the population grew in suburban settlements in the Counties of Vas, Zala, and Somogy. The population decreased in small suburban and other villages in the Counties of Vas and Zala. The population grew in all settlements in Somogy County. As soon as the suburbanization began in Baranya County, there was a considerate change in the population of suburban settlements. Between 2001 and 2006 the population grew in Baranya County the most, however, in Somogy County the population decreased. The most interesting period was between 2006 and 2011. Even today suburbanization is apparent in Vas County. The population grows in small suburban villages in Zala County, but it decreases in other settlements in this county. The population is dwindling in Somogy County in all types of settlements. The population grows in suburban settlements with more than 500 inhabitants in Baranya County, whereas the population dwindles in other settlements. Contrary to our expectations villages with less than 500 inhabitants have not increased their population more than those with more than 500 inhabitants. In Romonya, which is a small suburban village, people don’t consider suburbanization factor in the development of their villages. However the mayor of Romonya facilitates suburbanization, promoting it by selling sites to the inhabitants at a discounted prise.
