The aim of the study is to present the career of Antal Papp, one of the most outstanding lecturers and researchers in the field of settlement geography at the University of Debrecen. After presenting the biography of Antal Papp, the paper gives
an overview of his role in education and details his research achievements. In the
latter context, special emphasis is placed on his conclusions on the geography of
the settlement, of which the findings on the regional (and within this, primarily
Debrecen) catchment area are outstanding. He has had to redesign his life several
times, and has suffered many setbacks that have shattered his career. At the same
time, he has always strived to provide his students with the most up-to-date teaching
material and to help them achieve their goals. His research results were based on a
very wide range of information, and he tried to draw practical conclusions from the
available data using a variety of mathematical-statistical methods/measurements.
