The question is the same as in the case of the cities already examined (Kaposvár,
Sopron, Szolnok, Zalaegerszeg, Veszprém). The naming of public spaces is a symbolic occupation of space by central power. Eger is a settlement in Hungary where Saint Stephen founded a bishopric. Its development was influenced by a series
of tragedies. The opportunity for civic development opened up when he was freed
from church serfdom in 1854. In 1886 it received the title of a city with a council.
The early names of its public areas are known from official documents from
the 14th century. The first map of the manuscript with street names dates to 1787.
Most of the names are of geographical and topographical origin. There are also
religious concepts, names of historical figures, and individuals of the biosphere.
Since the map from 1888, the development of the city can be inferred from the
number of named public spaces, and the nature of power from the names.
